Tutorial: How to model a box truck – 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners

 

Welcome to the third tutorial of the Low-Poly Modeling for Beginners series. In this tutorial we will be modeling a low-poly box truck.

BASE
1. Change the Renderer to Cycles
2. Go into Orthographic View (5 on the Numpad) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
3. Scale the Cube (S + 2)
4. Tab into Edit Mode
5. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
6. Select the right-side face
7. Extrude the face along the X-Axis (E + X + 5)
8. Select the top face of the extrusion
9. Extrude the face along the Z-Axis (E + 3)
11. Select the two right-side faces
12. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + 20)
13. Select the top face
14. Extrude the face along the Z-Axis (E + 4)
10. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
15. Select the left-top loop cut (on the original Cube)
16. Use the Manipulator and move the loop cut down along the Z-Axis 1 Blender Unit
17. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
18. Select the left-top loop cut on the original Cube, center section, and the front of the rear section
19. Add a Bevel (CTRL + B) – drag the edge to about 3/10 of a Blender Unit and add 5 loop cuts (scroll the Middle-Mouse-Button)
20. Select the back edge of the rear section
24. Add a Bevel (CTRL + B) – drag the edge to about 3/10 of a Blender Unit and add 5 loop cuts (scroll the Middle-Mouse-Button)
25. Select the entire mesh (L)
26. Scale the mesh along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 2)

ENGINE COMPARTMENT
27. Deselect everything (A)
28. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
29. Make a horizontal loop cut (CTRL + R) and move it to 3/10 of a Blender Unit from the bottom of the cab
30. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
31. Select the front face of the bumper
32. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
33. Extrude the face along the X-Axis (E + X + -0.3)
34. Select the face of the bumper
35. Go into Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
36. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.3)
37. Select the left face of the bumper
38. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.3)
39. Select both back faces of the bumper
40. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
41. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.5)
42. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
43. Select the front corners of the bumper and go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
44. Add a Bevel (CTRL + B) – drag the edge to about 1/10 of a Blender Unit and add 3 loop cuts (scroll the Middle-Mouse-Button)
45. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
46. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
47. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube to the front of the truck
48. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
49. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
50. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.3)
51. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.7)
52. Add 2 horizontal loop cuts in the center (CTRL + R) – left-click only ONCE
53. Scale the loop cuts along the Z-Axis (S + Z) until they are about 1/10 of a Blender Unit apart
54. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
55. Select the top and bottom front faces and inset them (I + 0.05)
56. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
57. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.1)
58. Select the entire light (L) and move it along the Z-Axis (make sure the back of the inset faces is slightly in front of the body of the truck)
59. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
60. Place the light into position
61. Duplicate the light (SHIFT + D) and move it to the other side
62. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
63. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and move the Cube to the front of the truck
64. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
65. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
66. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.05)
67. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.7)
68. Position the Cube to it vertically lines up with the two lights
69. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D) and move the duplicate to the right
70. Repeat step 69 until you have five duplicated Cubes evenly spaced between the center Cube and the light
71. Select all 5 duplicates (L) and Duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
72. Move these new duplicates to the left side of the truck
73. Deselect everything (A)
74. Select the center Cube (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
75. Rotate the duplicated Cube around the X-Axis 90o (R + X + 90)
76. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 4.05)
77. Duplicate the horizontal Cube (SHIFT + D) and move it to the top of the vertical Cubes
78. Duplicate the horizontal Cube (SHIFT + D) and move it to the bottom of the vertical Cubes
79. Select the entire grill (L)
80. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
81. Move the grill along the X-Axis until it lines up with the lights
82. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
83. Select the hood (including the beveled edge)
84. Inset the selected faces (I + .03)

CAB
85. Select the front face of the cab (windshield)
86. Inset the selected face (I + .08)
87. Select the beveled faces and the face above the windshield
88. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
89. Use the Manipulator and move the selected faces along the X-Axis 1/2 of a Blender Unit
90. Select all four faces (both sides) of the cab sides
91. Inset the faces (I + 0.1)
92. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
93. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube to the front of the truck
94. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.7)
95. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.3)
96. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
97. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
98. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
99. Select the right-bottom edge
100. Use the Manipulator and move the edge along the Y-Axis about 1/10 of a Blender Unit
101. Select the entire door handle (L) and resize the door handle (S + 0.5)
102. Use the Manipulator and move the door handle into place
103. Duplicate the door handle (SHIFT + D)
104. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
105. Rotate the door handle 180o around the Z-Axis (R + Z + 180)
106. Move the door handle to the other door
107. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
108. Select the four panels of the doors
109. Inset the selected faces (I + .03)

TRAILER
110. Select the faces on the right and left side of the trailer
111. Inset the faces (I + 0.1)
112. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
113. Select the top face of the trailer
114. Inset the face (I + 0.1)
115. Go to the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
116. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
117. Make a horizontal loop cut (CTRL + R) and move it to 3/10 of a Blender Unit from the bottom of the cab (match the front bumper height)
118. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
119. Select the front face of the bumper
120. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
121. Extrude the face along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.3)
122. Select the face of the bumper
123. Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
124. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.3)
125. Select the right face of the bumper
126. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.3)
127. Select both front faces of the bumper
128. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
129. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + -2)
130. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
131. Select the front corners of the bumper and go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)

135. Select the three faces on the back of the truck
135. Inset the faces (I + 0.08)
136. Inset the faces (I + 0.1)
137. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
138. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
139. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube to the back of the truck
140. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.2)
141. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
142. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.7)
143. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.2)
144. Select the right face
145. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.2)
146. Select the left face
147. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.2)
148. Select the back faces of the extruded sections
149. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
150. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + -0.4)
151. Select the entire handle (L)
152. Use the Manipulator to put it in place
153. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad) and deselect everything (A)
154. Select both lights (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
155. Rotate the lights around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
156. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
157. Place the lights on the back of the truck
158. Go to the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
159. Select the three center faces on the back of the truck
160. Inset the faces (I + 0.3)
161. Deselect everything (A)
161. Select one light (L)
162. Scale the light along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.6)
163 Deselect everything (A)
164. Select the other light (L)
165. Scale the light along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.6)

MIRRORS
166. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
167. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
168. Add 2 horizontal loop cuts (CTRL + R) to the section in front of the door window
169. Add 2 horizontal loop cuts (CTRL + R) in between the loop cuts from step 168
170. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
171. Select the top and bottom faces (made by the loop cuts)
172. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
173. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.5)
174. Go into Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
175. Select the top and bottom faces (made by the loop cuts)
176. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
177. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.5)
178. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
179. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
180. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube in front of the door window
181. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
182. Go to the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
183. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.3)
184. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
185. Add a horizontal loop (CTRL + R) cut to the mirror – left-click only ONCE
186. Slide the loop cut down the mirror until it is about 5/10 of a Blender Unit from the bottom
187. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
188. Select both faces of the mirror and Inset them (I + .05)
189. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
190. Add a vertical edge loop (CTRL + R) in the center of each of the extrusions from steps 173 and 177
191. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
192. Select the mirror (L) and using the Manipulator move it into place
193. Select the faces of the extrusions (steps 173, 177) and extrude them along the X-Axis (E + X) until they meet the back of the mirror
194. Select the inset pieces of the mirror
195. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
196. Extrude the inset faces along the X-Axis (E + X + -.05)
197. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and select the entire mirror (L) and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
198. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
199. Move the duplicated mirror to the other side of the truck
200. Select the faces of the extrusions (steps 173, 177) and extrude them along the X-Axis (E + X) until they meet the back of the mirror

TIRES
201. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
202. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and change the vertices to 16 in the Tool Bar
203. Use the Manipulator to move the Cylinder in front of the engine compartment
204. Rotate the Cylinder around the X-Axis 90o (R + X + 90)
205. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
206. Scale the Cylinder along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.3)
207. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
208. Select the front face of the Cylinder
209. Inset the face (I + 0.3)
210. Select the entire tire (L) and use the Manipulator to move it into place
211. Select the top-half of the tire (top faces only)
212. Duplicate the selected faces (SHIFT + D)
213. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
214. Scale the duplicated faces along the X-Axis (S + X + 1.1)
215. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated faces up (about 1/10 of a Blender Unit above the tire)
216. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.3)
217. Select the tire and fender (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
218. Move the duplicates to the rear of the truck
219. Select both tires and fenders (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
220. Rotate the duplicates around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
221. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
222. Use the Manipulator to move the duplicates to the other side of the truck

COLOR
223. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
224. Open the Materials Tab and assign the default material to the entire truck
225. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to a black (#000000)
226. Select the outer parts of the tire, fenders, door handles, and outer parts of the mirrors
227. Choose the black material and assign it to the selected faces
228. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to a light gray (#b6b6b6)
229. Select the hub caps, grill, outer parts of the lights, and the handle (back of the truck)
230. Choose the light gray material and assign it to the selected faces
231. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to a dark gray (#424242)
232. Select the inset around the doors, the area around the inset portion of the trailer, and the bumpers
233. Choose the dark gray material and assign it to the selected faces
234. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to a light blue (#0879a3)
235. Select the windows and mirrors
236. Choose the light blue material and assign it to the selected faces
237. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to a white (#ffffff)
238. Select the top front lights
239. Choose the white material and assign it to the selected faces
240. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to an orange (#bd8b09)
241. Select the bottom two parts of the headlights and tail lights
242. Choose the orange material and assign it to the selected faces
243. Click the Plus Button and the New Button and change the color to a red (#e70f00)
244. Select the top two parts of the tail lights
242. Choose the red material and assign it to the selected faces
