Tutorial: How to Model a Castle – 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners

 

Welcome to the eighth tutorial of the 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners series. In this tutorial we will be modeling a castle.

OUTER WALL

  1. Change the Renderer to Cycles
  2. Go into Orthographic View (5 on the Numpad) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  3. Tab into Edit Mode
  4. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  5. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 6)
  6. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 6)
  7. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the top face
  8. Inset the faces (I + 0.8)
  9. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  10. Select the entire outer wall (L) and scale it along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 3)
  11. Select the top inset face extrude it along the Z-Axis (E + -6)

GUARD TOWER

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
  2. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and move the cube along the Y-Axis to the front of the outer wall
  3. Scale the guard tower along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 3)
  4. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  5. Align the guard tower to the front-right of the outer wall (make sure it is overlapping the outer wall)
  6. Select the top face of the guard tower and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  7. Scale the duplicated face (S + 1.2)
  8. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  9. Extrude the top face along the Z-Axis (E + 0.4)
  10. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  11. Make 6 vertical Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) on the top of the guard tower
  12. Make 6 horizontal Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) on the top of the guard tower
  13. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  14. Select the corner faces, the face on each side of the corner faces, and the faces in the center between the corner faces
  15. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  16. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.5)
  17. Select both sections of the guard tower (L)
  18. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  19. Duplicate the guard tower (SHIFT + D)
  20. Place the duplicate tower on the left-side of the castle
  21. Select all four sections of the two towers (L)
  22. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  23. Duplicate the guard towers (SHIFT + D)
  24. Place the duplicate towers on the rear of the castle
  25. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  26. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it along the Y-Axis to the front of the castle
  27. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  28. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  29. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.6)
  30. Select the front face and inset it (I + 0.2)
  31. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  32. Extrude the front face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.2)
  33. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  34. Select the entire window (L) and move it over the right-front guard tower
  35. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  36. Move the window along the Y-Axis until it is touching the guard tower
  37. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  38. Duplicate the window (SHIFT + D) and move the duplicate to the left-front guard tower
  39. Duplicate the window (SHIFT + D) and rotate it around the Z-Axis -90o (R + Z + -90)
  40. Place the window on the left side of the left-front guard tower and then deselect everything (A)
  41. Select the window on the right guard tower (L) and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  42. Rotate the window around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  43. Place the window on the right side of the right-front guard tower
  44. Select all four windows (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  45. Rotate the duplicates around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  46. Move the duplicates to the rear guard towers

BATTLEMENTS

  1. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  2. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it along the Y-Axis to the front of the castle
  3. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
  4. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  5. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.5)
  6. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.5)
  7. Move the battlement along the Z-Axis to the top of the castle wall
  8. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and align the battlement with the outer edge of the wall
  9. Duplicate the battlement (SHIFT + D) and move it to the right
  10. Repeat the process of duplication until you have five battlements evenly spaced on the front outer wall
  11. Select all five battlements (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  12. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and move the duplicates to the rear wall
  13. Duplicate all five battlements (SHIFT + D) and rotate them around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  14. Move the duplicates to the left wall
  15. Duplicate all five battlements (SHIFT + D) and move them to the right wall and deselect everything (A)

GATEHOUSE

  1. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and select the front-right bottom guard tower section (L) and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  2. Move the duplicate to the left and scale it (S + 0.6) – align it to the bottom of the castle wall
  3. Go into the Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  4. Line the gatehouse tower up with the fourth battlement – about 1 Blender Unit in front of the wall
  5. Duplicate the gatehouse tower (SHIFT + D) and line it up with the second battlement
  6. Select the back faces of the lower sections of the gatehouse towers
  7. Use the manipulator and extrude the face along the Y-Axis until they meet the outer wall
  8. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  9. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it along the Y-Axis to the front of the gatehouse
  10. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  11. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  12. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.4)
  13. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.9)
  14. Select the front face and inset it (I + 0.1)
  15. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  16. Extrude the face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.1)
  17. Select the entire door (L) and place it against the front-right gatehouse tower
  18. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  19. Move the door along the X-Axis to the right-front gatehouse tower
  20. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  21. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it along the Y-Axis to the front of the gatehouse
  22. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.05)
  23. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  24. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.05)
  25. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.3)
  26. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  27. Add 2 horizontal Edge Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) onto the door handle – left-click only ONE
  28. Scale the loop cuts along the Z-Axis (S + Z) until the are about 1/10 of a Blender Unit from the top and bottom
  29. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  30. Select the top and bottom back faces of the door handle
  31. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  32. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.2)
  33. Select the entire door handle (L), scale it (S + 0.5), and place it on the door (step #93)
  34. Select the door and the door handle (L) and duplicate the (SHIFT + D)
  35. Rotate the duplicates around the Y-Axis 180o (R + Y + 180)
  36. Move the duplicates to the left gatehouse tower
  37. Duplicate the door and door handle (SHIFT + D)
  38. Scale the duplicates along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 1.5)
  39. Move the duplicated along the X-Axis to the left-of-center (between the gatehouse towers)
  40. Align the door with the bottom of the castle wall
  41. Duplicate the door and door handle (SHIFT + D)
  42. Rotate the duplicates around the Y-Axis 180o (R + Y + 180)
  43. Move the duplicates to the left
  44. Select both doors and door handles (L)
  45. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  46. Move the doors and door handles along the Y-Axis to the outer wall
  47. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z) and deselect everything (A)
  48. Select the right face of the right-hand gatehouse tower
  49. Use the manipulator and extrude the face along the X-Axis about 1 Blender Unit
  50. Select the left face of the left-hand-hand gatehouse tower
  51. Use the manipulator and extrude the face along the X-Axis about 1 Blender Unit and deselect everything (A)
  52. Select the window from the right-side of the front-right guard tower (L) and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  53. Scale the window (S + 0.6)
  54. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  55. Move the duplicate along the Y-Axis into place over the right gatehouse tower
  56. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  57. Move the duplicate along the X-Axis into place over the right gatehouse tower
  58. Duplicate the window (SHIFT + D) and rotate it around the Z-Axis -180o (R + Z + -180)
  59. Move the duplicate to the left side of the gatehouse tower
  60. Select both windows (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  61. Move the duplicates to the left gatehouse tower
  62. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  63. Select the top faces of the gatehouse towers and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  64. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  65. Extrude the new faces along the Z-Axis (E + 1.5)
  66. Select only the top face of the right gatehouse tower
  67. Merge the four edges at the center (ALT + M … At Center)
  68. Select only the top face of the left gatehouse tower
  69. Merge the four edges at the center (ALT + M … At Center)
  70. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  71. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and change the number of vertices to 16
  72. Move the Cylinder along the Y-Axis to the front of the gatehouse
  73. Scale the Cylinder (S + 0.05)
  74. Use the Manipulator and move the flag pole over the right-side gatehouse tower
  75. Scale the flag pole along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 10) and move it up along the Z-Axis so it is even with the bottom of the battlements
  76. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  77. Add 2 horizontal Edge Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) to the flag pole – left-click only ONCE
  78. Scale the loop cuts along the Z-Axis (S + Z) until they are about 2/10 Blender Units apart
  79. Slide the loop cuts up along the Z-Axis until they are about 1/10 of a Blender Unit from the top of the flag pole
  80. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  81. Select the center face (between the loop cuts)
  82. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  83. Extrude the face along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.5)
  84. Select the entire flag pole (L) and make a duplicate (SHIFT + D)
  85. Rotate the duplicate around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  86. Move the duplicate to the left gatehouse tower
  87. Select the large doors and door handles (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  88. Rotate the around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180) and go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and move them into place
  89. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and select both of the large doors and door handles (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  90. Rotate the doors around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  91. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  92. Move the duplicates along the Y-Axis to the inside part of the outer wall

CASTLE

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
  2. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 4)
  3. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 3)
  4. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  5. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 2)
  6. Move the castle down along the Z-Axis and align it with the bottom of the outer wall
  7. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  8. Select the top face and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  9. Scale the duplicated face (S + 1.1)
  10. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  11. Extrude the face along the Z-Axis (E + 2)
  12. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  13. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the top and bottom edges of the face
  14. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  15. Merge the two edges (ALT + M … At Center) and back into Solid Mode (Z)
  16. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Front View (1 on the Numpad) and deselect everything (A)
  17. Select the large doors and door handles (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  18. Scale the duplicates (S + 0.7)
  19. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  20. Move the duplicated doors and door handles along the Y-Axis to the front of the castle
  21. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and align the doors with the bottom of the castle
  22. Go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  23. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it along the X-Axis so it is visible
  24. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.4)
  25. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  26. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  27. Go into the Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  28. Add 3 vertical Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) to the window
  29. Select the loop cuts on the top of the window and go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  30. Use the Manipulator and move the edges up along the Z-Axis 1/10 of a Blender Unit
  31. Select the middle edge and move it up along the Z-Axis 1/10 of a Blender Unit
  32. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  33. Select the 4 front faces and inset them (I + 0.1)
  34. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  35. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.1)
  36. Select the entire window (L) and Scale it (S + 0.5)
  37. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  38. Use the Manipulator and place the window on the front lower-half of the castle
  39. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and deselect everything (A)
  40. Select the outer wall, large doors, and gate house towers (L) and hide them (H)
  41. Select the castle window and duplicate the window (SHIFT + D) and move it to the right
  42. Select both windows (L) and duplicate them and move them to the left of the door
  43. Select all 4 windows (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  44. Go into Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and place the copies on the top-half of the castle
  45. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad) and deselect everything (A)
  46. Select two of the windows (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  47. Place the duplicated windows above the door
  48. Select all the windows and doors (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  49. Rotate the duplicates around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  50. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  51. Move the duplicates along the Y-Axis to the back of the castle
  52. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and deselect everything (A) and go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  53. Select 5 of the top windows from the front of the castle (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  54. Rotate them around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  55. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  56. Place the window on the upper-half of the right-side of the castle
  57. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and duplicate the windows (SHIFT + D)
  58. Move the duplicates to the lower-half of the castle
  59. Select all 10 windows (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  60. Rotate the duplicates around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  61. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicates to the other side of the castle
  62. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and deselect everything (A)
  63. Unhide everything (ALT + H) and deselect everything (A)

COLOR

  1. Open the Material Tab
  2. Click on the Plus Button and the New Button
  3. Rename the material “stone” and give it a gray color (#A7A7A7)
  4. Select the entire model and assign the stone material
  5. Click on the Plus Button and the New Button
  6. Rename the material “roof” and give it a burnt orange color (#A83E29)
  7. Select the roof of the castle and the guardhouse and assign the roof material
  8. Click on the Plus Button and the New Button
  9. Rename the material “wood” and give it a brown color (#A74922)
  10. Select the doors, door frames, door handles, flag poles, and window frames and assign the wood material [TIP: Hide the outer wall and gatehouse towers to make it easier to access the castle windows and doors – H (to hide) and ALT + H (to unhide)]
  11. Click on the Plus Button and the New Button
  12. Rename the material “window” and give it a creme color (#E7E3A4)
  13. Select the window and assign the window material [TIP: Hide the outer wall and gatehouse towers to make it easier to access the castle windows and doors – H (to hide) and ALT + H (to unhide)]
  14. Click on the Plus Button and the New Button
  15. Rename the material “flag” and give it a purple color (#AF13A3)
  16. Select the flags and assign the flag material
