Tutorial: How to Model a Fantasy-Style Scene – 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners

 

Welcome to the fifth tutorial of the 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners series. In this tutorial we will be modeling a low-poly medieval house.

BRIDGE

  1. Change the Renderer to Cycles
  2. Go into Orthographic View (5 on the Numpad) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  3. Delete the Cube (X)
  4. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and change the Vertices to 20
  5. Scale the Cylinder along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.3)
  6. Scale the Cylinder along the X- and Y-Axis (S + SHIFT + CTRL + ALT + Z + 5)
  7. Tab into Edit Mode
  8. Deselect everything (A)
  9. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A)
  10. Rotate the Cylinder around the X-Axis 90o (R + X + 90)
  11. Use the Manipulator and move the Cylinder along the X-Axis 3 Blender Units to the left of the central Cylinder
  12. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB), select the front and back faces and Inset them (I + 0.1) and delete the front and back (center) faces
  13. Go into Wireframe Move (Z) and deselect everything (A)
  14. Using Box Select (B) – select the bottom half of the Cylinder and delete the faces (X)
  15. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and select the Cylinder (L)
  16. Use the Manipulator and move the Cylinder down along the Z-Axis until the top portion is at the center point of the original Cylinder (the red X-Axis line)
  17. Scale the Cylinder along the X-Axis (S + X + 1.5)
  18. Use the Manipulator and move the Cylinder along the X-Axis so the right-bottom vertex is 3 Blender Units to the left of the central Cylinder
  19. Duplicate the Cylinder (SHIFT + D)
  20. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated Cylinder along the X-Axis 3 Blender Units to the left of the original Cylinder
  21. Duplicate the Cylinder (SHIFT + D)
  22. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated Cylinder along the X-Axis 3 Blender Units to the left of the second Cylinder
  23. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and deselect everything (A)
  24. Select the first section of the bridge (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  25. Move the duplicate to the right of the first bridge section
  26. Go into Wireframe Move (Z) and deselect everything (A)
  27. Use Box Select (B) and select the right-side of the duplicated bridge section
  28. Delete the selection (X)
  29. Use Box Select (B) and select the remaining half of the bridge section
  30. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  31. Use the Manipulator and move the half-bridge section along the X-Axis until it touches the central Cylinder
  32. Select the bottom face of the half-bridge section and first bridge section
  33. Bridge the faces (W > Bridge Edge Loops)
  34. Repeat this process for the next four faces
  35. Select the bottom face) of the first and second bridge sections
  36. Bridge the faces (W > Bridge Edge Loops)
  37. Repeat this process for the next four faces
  38. Select the bottom face of the second and third bridge sections
  39. Bridge the faces (W > Bridge Edge Loops)
  40. Repeat this process for the next four faces
  41. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  42. Select the individual edges underneath the bridge sections and fill them (F) with a face
  43. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  44. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  45. Deselect everything (A) and use Box Select (B) and select the left-half of the third bridge section
  46. Delete the left-half of the bridge section (X)
  47. Go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  48. Select the top faces of the bridge and Extrude them along the Z-Axis (E + 0.5)
  49. Select the top face of the central Cylinder and use the Manipulator to move it up along the Z-Axis until it is the same height as the bridge
  50. Go into Bottom View (CTRL + 7 on the Numpad)
  51. Select the bottom three faces of the bridge sections and Inset them (I + 0.05)
  52. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  53. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 3)
  54. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  55. Add two horizontal Edge Loops (CTRL + R) to the bridge deck – left-click only ONCE
  56. Scale the Edge Loops along the Y-Axis (S + Y)
  57. Slide the Edge Loops out until they are 1/10 of a Blender Unit away from the edges
  58. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the six new faces
  59. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  60. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.2)
  61. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z)
  62. Use Box Select (B) and select all the parts of the bridge
  63. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  64. Duplicate the bridge (SHIFT + D)
  65. Rotate the duplicated bridge around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  66. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated bridge to the lower-section of the central Cylinder
  67. Repeat this process until you have four bridge sections surrounding the central Cylinder
  68. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and select the bottom face of the central Cylinder
  69. Move the face up along the Z-Axis until it is the same height as the bottom of the bridge deck
  70. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and select the entire central Cylinder (L)
  71. Rotate the central Cylinder around the Z-Axis 9o (R + Z + 9)
  72. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z) and deselect everything
  73. Select the entire bridge (B) and scale the bridge along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.8)
  74. Go into Solid Mode (Z)
  75. Move the entire bridge until it is attached to the central Cylinder
  76. Repeat this process for the other three bridge sections (NOTE: the top and bottom sections need scaled along the X-Axis)

SACRED SPACE

  1. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and select the top face of the central Cylinder
  2. Inset the face (I + 0.3)
  3. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  4. Extrude the inset face along the Z-Axis (E + 0.2)
  5. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and select the top face of the central Cylinder
  6. Inset the face (I + 0.1)
  7. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  8. Extrude the inset face along the Z-Axis (E + 0.2)
  9. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A)
  10. Use the Manipulator and move the Cylinder on top of the second inset face (step 99)
  11. Scale the Cylinder (S + 0.3)
  12. Scale the Cylinder along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.2)
  13. Use the Manipulator and move the Cylinder down along the Z-Axis until it is sitting on top of the inset face (step 99)
  14. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  15. Select the top face of the Cylinder and Inset it (I)
  16. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  17. Extrude the face along the Z-Axis (E + 0.2)
  18. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  19. Select the top face of the Cylinder and Inset it (I)
  20. Select the entire Cylinder (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  21. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and rotate the duplicated Cylinder around the Y-Axis 180o (R + Y + 180)
  22. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated Cylinder up along the Z-Axis (the bottom should be five Blender Units above the original Cylinder)
  23. Select the inner face of both Cylinders and Bridge the Edge Loops (W > Bridge Edge Loops)
  24. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  25. Use Box Select (B) and select the entire column
  26. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  27. Use the Manipulator and move the column along the X- and Y-Axis until it sits in front of the second face from the center of the top of the inset steps
  28. Duplicate the column (SHIFT + D)
  29. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated column along the X-Axis to the left
  30. Select both columns (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  31. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated columns along the Y-Axis to the bottom
  32. Add a UV Sphere (SHIFT + A) and change the Segments to 20 and the Rings to 10
  33. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and move the UV Sphere above the columns
  34. Deselect everything (A) and go into Wireframe Mode (Z)
  35. Use Box Select (B) and select the bottom-half of the UV Sphere and delete the faces (X)
  36. Go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  37. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  38. Select the bottom edge of the UV Sphere (ALT + right-click)
  39. Fill the bottom of the UV Sphere with a face (F)
  40. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  41. Select the entire dome (L) and move it along the Z-Axis so it sits on top of the columns
  42. Scale the dome along the X- and Y-Axis (S + SHIFT + CTRL + ALT + Z + 2)
  43. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and deselect everything (A)
  44. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z)
  45. Select the top two columns (L) and move them under the dome
  46. Select the bottom two columns (L) and move them under the dome
  47. Go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  48. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)

CRYSTALS

  1. Add an Ico Sphere (SHIFT + A) and make the Subdivisions 1
  2. Scale the central crystal along the X- and Y-Axis (S + SHIFT + CTRL + ALT + Z + 0.5)
  3. Move the central crystal along the Z-Axis until it is centered between the columns
  4. Duplicate the central crystal (SHIFT + D) and Scale the duplicate crystal (S + 0.3)
  5. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Move (Z)
  6. Use the Manipulator and move the small crystal to the left of the central crystal
  7. Duplicate the small crystal three times and place the duplicates around the central crystal
  8. Select all the crystals and center then between the columns
  9. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)

CRYSTAL LIGHTS

  1. Deselect everything (A)
  2. Select one column (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  3. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  4. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated column to the bottom-center of the first bridge section
  5. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  6. Scale the light stand (S + 0.5)
  7. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z) and move the light stand so it sits on top of the bridge deck
  8. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  9. Duplicate the light stand (SHIFT + D) and move it along the Y-Axis to the top side of the bridge
  10. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and deselect everything (A)
  11. Select one of the small crystals (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  12. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicated crystal over one of the light stands (about 2/10 of a Blender Unit above the light stand)
  13. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  14. Center the light crystal above the bottom light stand
  15. Duplicate the light crystal (SHIFT + D) and move it above the other light stand
  16. Select both light crystals and light stands (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  17. Move the duplicates to the center of the second section of the bridge
  18. Duplicate the light crystals and light stands (SHIFT + D) and move them to the third section of the bridge
  19. Duplicate the light crystals and light stand (SHIFT + D) and move them until they are on each bridge section

COLOR

  1. Open the Material Tab, click on the plus button and the New button
  2. Rename the material “stone” and change the color to a dark gray (#414141)
  3. Assign the material to the entire model
  4. Click on the plus button and the New button
  5. Rename the material “light stone” and change the color to a light gray (#6B6B6B)
  6. Select the columns, inset floor, dome, and light stands and assign the light gray color
  7. Click on the plus button and the New button
  8. Rename the material “blue crystal” and change the color to a bright blue (#06E4E7)
  9. Change the Surface to Emission and the Strength to 3
  10. Select the central crystals and apply the blue color
  11. Click on the plus button and the New button
  12. Rename the material “yellow crystal” and change the color to a bright yellow (#BDB510)
  13. Change the Surface to Emission and the Strength to 1.5
  14. Select the light crystals and apply the yellow color
