Tutorial: How to model a medieval house – 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners

 

Welcome to the fourth tutorial of the 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners series. In this tutorial we will be modeling a low-poly medieval house.

HOUSE BASE

  1. Change the Renderer to Cycles, go into Orthographic View (5 on the Numpad) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  2. Select the Cube and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  3. Tab into Edit Mode
  4. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 4)
  5. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  6. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 6)
  7. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  8. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  9. Select the top face of the Cube and move it along the Z-Axis 2 Blender Units
  10. Make a copy of the top face (SHIFT + D)
  11. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  12. Scale the face along the X-Axis (S + X + 1.1)
  13. Scale the face along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 1.1)
  14. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  15. Extrude along the Z-Axis (E + 2)
  16. Make a copy of the top face (SHIFT + D)
  17. Extrude along the Z-Axis (E + 4)
  18. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  19. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  20. Select the right edge and SHIFT-select the left edge
  21. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  22. Scale the edges along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
  23. Deselect everything (A)
  24. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  25. Select all three sections of the roof
  26. Extrude all three parts of the roof (E + 0.2)
  27. Deselect everything (A)
  28. Select the right-lower-edge of the roof and extrude along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.5)
  29. Using the Manipulator move the extrusion along the Z-Axis to match the slope of the roof
  30. Select the left-lower-edge of the roof and extrude along the X-Axis (E + X + -0.5)
  31. Using the Manipulator move the extrusion along the Z-Axis to match the slope of the roof
  32. Select the front faces of the roof and go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  33. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.2)
  34. Select the back faces of the roof and go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  35. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.2)
  36. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)

WOOD ACCENTS (LOWER LEVEL)

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
  2. Select the Cube and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  3. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the X-Axis so it is visible
  4. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.15)
  5. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  6. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.15)
  7. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is in front of the house
  8. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and use the Manipulator and move the Cube along the X-Axis so it is against the right-corner of the house
  9. Select the top face of the Cube and move it up along the Z-Axis until it meets the bottom edge of the overhanging section
  10. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and select the entire Cube (L)
  11. Use the Manipulator and align the Cube with the front corner of the overhanging section
  12. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D) and go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  13. Move the duplicated Cube to the left corner of the house.

DOOR

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A)
  2. Select the Cube and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  3. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  4. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  5. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.3)
  6. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  7. Select the top face of the Cube and move it up along the Z-Axis about 1/2 of a Blender Unit
  8. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  9. Add 4 vertical Loop Cuts to the Cube (CTRL + R)
  10. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  11. Select the top-middle face of the Cube and move it up along the Z-Axis 3/10 of a Blender Unit
  12. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  13. Select the two top inner edges on either side of the middle face
  14. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z) and move the edges up along the Z-Axis 2/10 of a Blender Unit
  15. Select the entire Cube (L) and go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  16. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube (doorway) along the Y-Axis so the front faces are about 2/10 of a Blender Unit in front of the house
  17. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Solid Mode (Z)
  18. Select the front faces and inset them (I + 0.1)
  19. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  20. Extrude the front faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.15)
  21. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  22. Deselect everything (A)
  23. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  24. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  25. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  26. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.03)
  27. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  28. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.19)
  29. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  30. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the door (but inside the frame)
  31. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  32. Select the top face of the Cube and move it along the Z-Axis so it is tall enough to fit the doorframe
  33. Select the entire Cube (L) and make a duplicate (SHIFT +D)
  34. Move the duplicate to the right of the original Cube (leaving a small gap between the two)
  35. Repeat this process until you have all 5 door panels
  36. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select and move the individual top edges so they are within the doorframe
  37. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  38. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  39. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.02)
  40. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  41. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.4)
  42. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.2)
  43. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the right face of the Cube
  44. Scale the face along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.1)
  45. Select the entire Cube (hinge) (L)
  46. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  47. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the door (but on top of the door panels)
  48. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  49. Move the hinge to the left side of the door (in the upper-half) of the doorframe
  50. Make a duplicate of the hinge (SHIFT +D)
  51. Move the duplicated hinge to the lower-half of the doorframe
  52. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  53. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  54. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  55. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.05)
  56. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  57. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.07)
  58. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.3)
  59. Select the top face of the Cube (handle) and extrude it along the Z-Axis (E + 0.1)
  60. Select the bottom face of the Cube (handle) and extrude it along the Z-Axis (E + 0.1)
  61. Select the back faces of the two extruded faces
  62. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  63. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.1)
  64. Select the entire Cube (handle) (L) and go into Wireframe Mode (Z)
  65. Using the Manipulator move the Cube (handle) along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the door (but on top of the door panels)
  66. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  67. Move the handle to the right side of the door (in the center) of the doorframe

SUPPORT BEAMS

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  2. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  3. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 6.5)
  4. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  5. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.5)
  6. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.3)
  7. Move the Cube along the Z-Axis so it is touching the bottom of the overhanging section
  8. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D) and move the duplicate to the right of the Cube
  9. Repeat this process until you have 5 Cubes evenly spaced
  10. Select all 5 Cubes (L) and Duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  11. Rotate the duplicates around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z +90)
  12. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.67)
  13. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  14. Select each of the Cubes (L) and space them evenly (leaving the middle one in the center)
  15. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)

CORNER BEAMS

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  2. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  3. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  4. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
  5. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  6. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.3)
  7. Select the top face of the Cube and move it up along the Z-Axis until it meets the bottom side of the overhanging section
  8. Select the entire Cube (L) and move it along the X-Axis to the front-right side of the house
  9. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  10. Move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is flush against the house
  11. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  12. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D+ ENTER)
  13. Rotate the duplicate around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  14. Move the Cube along the X-Axis so it is flush against the corner of the house
  15. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is flush against the corner of the house
  16. Select both Cubes (corner pieces) (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  17. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  18. Rotate the corner pieces around the Z-Axis -90o (R + Z + -90)
  19. Move the duplicates so they are flush against the left-front side of the house
  20. Select all four corner pieces (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  21. Rotate the corner pieces around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  22. Move the duplicates so they are flush against the back corners of the house
  23. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)

WINDOWS

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  2. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  3. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  4. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  5. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  6. Select the front face of the Cube and Inset (I + 0.1)
  7. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  8. Extrude the front face along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.2)
  9. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  10. Select the entire Cube (window) (L) and move it up along the Z-Axis to the upper part of the house
  11. Scale the window along the X-Axis (S + X + 1.5)
  12. Scale the window along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 1.5)
  13. Move the Cube up along the Z-Axis (until it is centered in the upper part of the house)
  14. Deselect everything (A)
  15. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  16. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  17. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  18. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.05)
  19. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  20. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
  21. Move the Cube along the Z-Axis so it is centered over the window
  22. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 2)
  23. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  24. Move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is inside the window frame
  25. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  26. Rotate the Cube around the Y-Axis -45o (R + Y + -45)
  27. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D)
  28. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicate along the Z-Axis
  29. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D)
  30. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicate along the Z-Axis
  31. Select the top (left) faces of each of the duplicates and move them (G) so they are inside the window frame
  32. Select the Cubes (L) and Duplicate them (SHIFT + D) and rotate them around the Y-Axis 180o (R + Y + 180)
  33. Use the Manipulator and move them to the lower part of the window frame
  34. Select all 5 Cubes (window slates) (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  35. Rotate the duplicates around the Y-Axis 90o (R + Y + 90)
  36. Select all the window slates and the window frame
  37. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  1. Move the window along the Y-Axis so the back of the slates are flush against the house
  2. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  3. Select all the window parts and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  4. Rotate the duplicate around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  5. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  6. Use the Manipulator and move the window to the lower-left part of the house
  7. Scale the window (S + 0.6)
  8. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  9. Use the Manipulator and move the window along the X-Axis until the back of the slates are flush with the house
  10. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and duplicate the window (SHIFT + D)
  11. Move the duplicate to the right and center it and go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  12. Select both windows (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  13. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  14. Rotate the duplicate around the Z-Axis 180o (R + Z + 180)
  15. Move the duplicates to the left side of the house – making them flush to the side of the house
  16. Deselect everything (A)

WOOD ACCENTS (UPPER LEVEL – WINDOWS)

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  2. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  3. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the Y-Axis so it is visible in front of the house
  4. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
  5. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  6. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.2)
  7. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube along the Z-Axis until it meets the roof
  8. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  9. Move the Cube along the Y-Axis until it is flush with the window
  10. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D) and move the duplicate below the window
  11. Resize the duplicate along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.5)
  12. Move the bottom Cube until it sits flush with the bottom of the window
  13. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  14. Duplicate the Cube and rotate it around the Y-Axis 90o (R + Y + 90)
  15. Move the duplicate so it is flush against the bottom of the upper part of the house
  16. Scale the horizontal Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 9)
  17. Duplicate the horizontal Cube (SHIFT + D)
  18. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  19. Move the duplicated Cube to the back of the house until it is flush with the upper part of the house
  20. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D)
  21. Rotate the duplicate around the Z-Axis 90o (R + Z + 90)
  22. Go into the Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
  23. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicate along the X-Axis until it is flush with the rear-horizontal Cube
  24. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and center the duplicated Cube
  25. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 1.5)
  26. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad) and duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D)
  27. Duplicate the Cube and move it along the X-Axis to the left side of the house until it is flush with the front-horizontal Cube
  28. Deselect everything (A)

WOOD ACCENTS (UPPER LEVEL)

  1. Select the Cube (L) at the bottom-center of the window and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  2. Move the duplicate to the right-corner of the window
  3. Duplicate this Cube (SHIFT + D) and move it to the left-corner of the window
  4. Deselect everything (A)
  5. Select the horizontal Cube (L)
  6. Duplicate the horizontal Cube (SHIFT + D) and move it above the window
  7. Scale the duplicated Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.45)
  8. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  9. Select the bottom-right edge of the Cube and move it along the X-Axis until it is in the roof-line
  10. Select the bottom-left edge of the Cube and move it along the X-Axis until it is in the roof-line
  11. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  12. Select the lower horizontal Cube (L) and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  13. Scale the duplicate along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.4)
  14. Rotate the duplicated Cube around the Y-Axis 45o (R + Y + 45)
  15. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicate until it is between the roof line and the horizontal Cube
  16. Duplicate the angled Cube (SHIFT + D)
  17. Rotate the duplicate around the Y-Axis 90o (R + Y + 90)
  18. Use the Manipulator and move the duplicate until it is between the roof line and the horizontal Cube
  19. Select the two angled Cubes and the two Cubes above the widow (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  20. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  21. Move the duplicated Cubes so they are flush with the back of the house
  22. Deselect everything (A)
  23. Go to the Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
  24. Select the bottom face of the vertical Cube and move it down along the Z-Axis until it is flush with the bottom horizontal Cube
  25. Deselect everything (A)
  26. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and select the horizontal Cube (L)
  27. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D)
  28. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube so it is flush with the bottom of the house
  29. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  30. Make sure the horizontal Cube is flush against the house
  31. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  32. Select the right-face and move it along the Y-Axis until it is behind the corner piece
  33. Select the left-face and move it along the Y-Axis until it is behind the corner piece
  34. Select the bottom horizontal Cube (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  35. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  36. Move the duplicated Cube to the opposite side of the house
  37. Go into Solid Mode (Z)
  38. Go into Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
  39. Deselect everything (A)
  40. Select the horizontal Cube (L)
  41. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D)
  42. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube so it is flush with the bottom of the house
  43. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  44. Make sure the horizontal Cube is flush against the house
  45. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and the Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
  46. Select the right-face and move it along the Y-Axis until it is behind the corner piece
  47. Select the left-face and move it along the Y-Axis until it is behind the corner piece
  48. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  49. Duplicate the Cube (SHIFT + D) and move it along the Y-Axis so it is flush against the front of the house
  50. Move the Cube along the X-Axis so it is flush against the left-corner Cube
  51. Select the right-face and move it along the X-Axis until it is on the left side of the door
  52. Select the entire Cube (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  53. Move the duplicate along the X-Axis to the opposite side of the door

CHIMNEY

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move the Cube up one Blender Unit (G + Z + 1)
  2. Using the Manipulator move the Cube along the X-Axis so it is visible
  3. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.6)
  4. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  5. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.6)
  6. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube up along the Z-Axis until it is about 1/2 of a Blender Unit above the roof
  7. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube (chimney) onto the rear section of the roof
  8. Select the top face of the chimney and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  9. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  10. Scale the duplicated face (S + 1.3)
  11. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  12. Extrude the face along the Z-Axis (E + Z + 0.4)
  13. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  14. Select the top face and Inset the top face (I + 0.2)
  15. Go into Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  16. Extrude the face along the Z-Axis (E + -0.2)
  17. Go back into Solid Mode (Z) and Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
  18. Select both sections of the chimney and move them along the X-Axis until the chimney is within the roofline

COLOR

  1. Open the Material Tab, click on the plus button and the new button and rename the material “roof”
  2. Change the color to a very dark gray (#1D1D1D)
  3. Select the top of the roof and assign the roof material
  4. Click on the plus button and the new button and rename the material “metal”
  5. Change the color to a dark gray (#636363)
  6. Select the door hinges and handle and assign the metal material
  7. Click on the plus button and the new button and rename the material “stone”
  8. Change the color to a gray (#747474)
  9. Select the chimney and bottom of the house and assign the metal material
  10. Click on the plus button and the new button and rename the material “wood”
  11. Change the color to a brown (#90451A)
  12. Select the remainder of the house (except the walls) and assign the wood material
  13. Click on the plus button and the new button and rename the material “wall”
  14. Change the color to a crème color (#DCE0C0)
  15. Select the remainder of the house and assign the wall material
