Tutorial: How to Model a Pirate Ship – 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners

 

Welcome to the sixth tutorial of the 3D Low-Poly Game Modeling for Beginners series. In this tutorial we will be modeling a low-poly pirate ship.

SHIP BODY

  1. Change the Renderer to Cycles
  2. Go into Orthographic View (5 on the Numpad) and Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  3. Tab into Edit Mode and go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  4. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 10)
  5. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 3)
  6. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  7. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Bottom View (CTRL + 7 on the Numpad)
  8. Add a horizontal Loop Cut (CTRL + R)
  9. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  10. Add three vertical Loop Cuts (CTRL + R)
  11. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  12. Select the left and right edges and scale them along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
  13. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  14. Select the left and right edges and scale them along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.7)
  15. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  16. Use Circle Select (C) and select the bottom faces of the ship body
  17. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 1)
  18. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  19. Scale the faces along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.5)
  20. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 1)
  21. Scale the faces along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  22. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and deselect everything (A)
  23. Circle Select (C) all the top faces
  24. Inset the faces (I + 0.05)
  25. Select the faces around the outer edge of the ship body
  26. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  27. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.5)
  28. Select the new faces (only those facing you)
  29. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  30. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.2)
  31. Go into Back View (CTRL + 1 on the Numpad)
  32. Select the new faces (only those facing you)
  33. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  34. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + 0.2)
  35. Select the new faces (only those facing you)
  36. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  37. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.2)
  38. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  39. Select the new faces (only those facing you)
  40. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  41. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + -0.2)
  42. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  43. Select the four middle faces and inset them (I)
  44. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  45. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + -0.5)
  46. Go into Solid Mode (Z)

QUARTERDECK

  1. Select the top two faces at the back of the ship
  2. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  3. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.5)
  4. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and select all the top faces at the back of the ship
  5. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  6. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 2)
  7. Select the top faces of the outer edge of the quarterdeck
  8. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  9. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.2)
  10. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  11. Add two horizontal Edge Loops (CTRL + R) to the bottom face of the quarterdeck
  12. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  13. Select the top faces of the outer edge of the quarterdeck
  14. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  15. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 1)

LADDER

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it above the deck
  2. Scale the stringer along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
  3. Scale the stringer along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
  4. Move the stringer so the top-right face it is touching the quarterdeck
  5. Select the bottom face of the stringer
  6. Use the Manipulator and move the face down along the Z-Axis until it touches the deck
  7. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  8. Move the bottom face along the Z-Axis about 1 Blender unit to the left
  9. Go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  10. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad) and Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  11. Add fourteen horizontal Loop Cuts (CTRL + R)
  12. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  13. Select the entire stringer (L) and duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  14. Move the duplicated stringer to the left 1 Blender Unit
  15. Select every-other face on the inside of each stringer (starting with the second from the top)
  16. Bridge the Edge Loops (W > Bridge Edge Loops)
  17. Repeat this process until you have seven rungs

SHIP’S WHEEL

  1. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it above the quarterdeck
  2. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  3. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.2)
  4. Use the Manipulator and move the Cube onto the quarterdeck
  5. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and change the Vertices to 16
  6. Move the Cylinder above the deck
  7. Rotate the Cylinder around the Y-Axis 90o (R + Y + 90)
  8. Scale the Cylinder (S + 0.2)
  9. Move the Cylinder and place it 3/4 of the way up the Cube (step 82)
  10. Leave 1/2 of the Cylinder sticking out the back of the Cube
  11. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  12. Select the face of the Cylinder and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  13. Scale the duplicate face (S + 2)
  14. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  15. Extrude the face along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.05)
  16. Delete both the front and back faces
  17. Select the entire wheel (L) and rotate it around the X-Axis 9o (R + X + 9)
  18. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and move it behind the ship’s wheel
  19. Scale the Cylinder along the X- and Y-Axis (S + SHIFT + CTRL + ALT + Z + .02)
  20. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  21. Use the Manipulator to center the Cylinder over the circle
  22. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  23. Use the Manipulator to move the Cylinder down the Z-Axis until the Cylinder is about 1 Blender Unit below the bottom of the circle
  24. Select the top face of the Cylinder
  25. Use the Manipulator to move the face down the Z-Axis until the face is about 1 Blender Unit above the top of the circle
  26. Select the entire Cylinder (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  27. Rotate the duplicated Cylinder around the X-Axis 45o (R + X + 45)
  28. Deselect everything (A)
  29. Select the original (vertical) Cylinder (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  30. Rotate the duplicated Cylinder around the X-Axis -45o (R + X + -45)
  31. Deselect everything (A)
  32. Select the original (vertical) Cylinder (L) and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  33. Rotate the duplicated Cylinder around the X-Axis 90o (R + X + 90)

DOOR

  1. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Solid Mode (Z)
  2. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it above the deck
  3. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.3)
  4. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  5. Move the door down along the Z-Axis until it is on the deck
  6. Select the top face of the Cube and move it up along the Z-Axis about 1/2 of a Blender Unit
  7. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  8. Add four vertical Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) to the door
  9. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  10. Select the top-middle face of the Cube and move it up along the Z-Axis 3/10 of a Blender Unit
  11. Go into Solid Mode (Z) and Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  12. Select the two top inner edges on either side of the middle face
  13. Go into Wireframe Mode (Z) and move the edges up along the Z-Axis 2/10 of a Blender Unit
  14. Select the entire door (L) and go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  15. Use the Manipulator and move the door along the X-Axis so the front faces are about 3/10 of a Blender Unit in front of the quarterdeck
  16. Go back into Solid Mode (Z)
  17. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  18. Add one horizontal Loop Cut (CTRL + R) – left-click ONCE
  19. Slide the Loop Cut up along the Z-Axis until it is about 2/10 of a Blender Unit from the top of the door
  20. Add one vertical Loop Cut (CTRL + R) to the right-side of the door – left-click ONCE
  21. Slide the Loop Cut along the Y-Axis until it is about 2/10 of a Blender Unit from the right-side of the door
  22. Add one vertical Loop Cut (CTRL + R) to the left-side of the door – left-click ONCE
  23. Slide the Loop Cut along the Y-Axis until it is about 2/10 of a Blender Unit from the left-side of the door
  24. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the inner faces of the door
  25. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad) and Wireframe Mode (Z)
  26. Extrude the front faces along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.04)
  27. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad) and select the entire door (L) and move it into position
  28. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it above the deck
  29. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.1)
  30. Scale the Cube along the X-Axis (S + X + 0.1)
  31. Scale the Cube along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.5)
  32. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  33. Select the top face of the door handle and extrude it along the Z-Axis (E + 0.1)
  34. Select the bottom face of the door handle and extrude it along the Z-Axis (E + 0.1)
  35. Select the top and bottom back faces of the extrusions
  36. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + 0.3)
  37. Select the entire door handle (L) and Scale it (S + 0.5)
  38. Use the Manipulator and place the door handle on the door

MAST

  1. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and move it above the quarterdeck
  2. Scale the Cylinder (S + 0.3)
  3. Move the mast down onto the quarterdeck
  4. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  5. Center the mast in the back 1/5 of the quarterdeck
  6. Select the top face and Duplicate it (SHIFT + D)
  7. Scale the duplicated face (S + 0.7)
  8. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  9. Extrude the mast along the Z-Axis (E + 10)
  10. Scale the top of the mast (S + 0.3)
  11. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad) and select the entire mast (L)
  12. Duplicate the mast (SHIFT + D)
  13. Move the duplicated mast to the front fifth of the deck
  14. Move the front mast down along the Z-Axis until it is sitting on the deck
  15. Select the top face of the front mast
  16. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  17. Use the Manipulator and move the top face along the Z-Axis until the front mast is as tall as the rear mast

SAIL

  1. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  2. Add a Plane (SHIFT + A) and move it above the quarterdeck
  3. Rotate the sail around the Y-Axis 90o (R + Y + 90)
  4. Scale the sail along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 2)
  5. Scale the sail along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 1.5)
  6. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  7. Add two horizontal Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) to the sail – left-click only ONCE
  8. Scale the Loop Cuts along the Z-Axis (S + Z) until they are about 1/10 of a Blender Unit from the top and bottom of the sail
  9. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the top and bottom faces of the sail
  10. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  11. Extrude the faces along the X-Axis (E + X + .01)
  12. Go into Edge Mode and the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  13. Add three horizontal Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) to the sail
  14. Add two vertical Loop Cuts (CTRL + R) to the sail
  15. Select the three horizontal Loop Cuts and go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  16. Use the Manipulator and move the Loop Cuts along the X-Axis 3/10 of a Blender Unit (to the left)
  17. Select the center Loop Cut and go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  18. Use the Manipulator and move the Loop Cuts along the X-Axis 1/10 of a Blender Unit (to the left)
  19. Select the entire sail (L)
  20. Go into the Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  21. Use the Manipulator and move the sail to the rear mast (about 3 Blender Units from the top) (NOTE: the sail may need to be rotated around the Y-Axis to make it straight)
  22. Duplicate the sail (SHIFT + D)
  23. Move the duplicated sail to the front mast (about 3 Blender Units from the top)
  24. Go into the Left-Side View (CTRL + 3 on the Numpad)
  25. Duplicate the front sail (SHIFT +D)
  26. Scale the duplicated sail (S + 1.5)
  27. Move the sail into place about 1/2 a Blender Unit below the smaller sail

CROW’S NEST

  1. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  2. Add a Cylinder (SHIFT + A) and move it above the deck
  3. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB) and select the top face
  4. Scale the face (S + 1.2)
  5. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  6. Select the top face and Inset it (I)
  7. Delete the top face (X)
  8. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  9. Select the entire crow’s nest (L) and move it above the small sail on the front mast
  10. Scale the crow’s nest along the Z-Axis (S + Z + 0.7)

PORTHOLE

  1. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  2. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it above the deck
  3. Scale the Cube (S + 0.5)
  4. Go into Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  5. Scale the porthole along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.5)
  6. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  7. Add two horizontal Loop Cuts (CTRL + R)
  8. Add four vertical Loop Cuts (CTRL + R)
  9. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  10. Select the second and fourth face in the center row
  11. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  12. Extrude the faces along the Z-Axis (E + 0.2)
  13. Select the entire porthole (L) and go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  14. Use the Manipulator and move the porthole into position (make sure the extrusions are touching the side of the ship)
  15. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  16. Make two duplicates (SHIFT + D) and center them along the side of the ship
  17. Select all three portholes (L) and duplicate them (SHIFT + D)
  18. Go into the Right-Side View (3 on the Numpad)
  19. Use the Manipulator and place the duplicates on the opposite side of the ship

WINDOWS

  1. Go into Front View (1 on the Numpad)
  2. Add a Cube (SHIFT + A) and move it above the deck
  3. Scale the Cube along the Y-Axis (S + Y + 0.2)
  4. Select the front face and inset it (I + 0.1)
  5. Go into Edge Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  6. Add eight horizontal Edge Loops (CTRL + R)
  7. Add eight vertical Edge Loops (CTRL + R)
  8. Go into Face Mode (CTRL + TAB)
  9. Select the second, fifth, and eighth row and column of faces
  10. Select the outside frame area
  11. Go into the Top View (7 on the Numpad)
  12. Extrude the faces along the Y-Axis (E + Y + -0.1)
  13. Select the entire window (L)
  14. Use the Manipulator and place the window along the back of the quarterdeck
  15. Scale the window (S + 0.6)
  16. Duplicate the window twice (SHIFT + D) and align the windows on the back of the quarterdeck

COLOR

  1. Open the Material Tab
  2. Click the plus button and new button and rename the material “wood”
  3. Give the wood material a brown color (#976822)
  4. Select everything (A) and assign the wood color to the entire ship
  5. Click the plus button and new button and rename the material “frames”
  6. Give the frames material a white color (#FFFFFF)
  7. Select the window frames and assign the frames color to the window frames
  8. Click the plus button and new button and rename the material “window”
  9. Give the window material a sky-blue color (#31B7E7)
  10. Select the windows and assign the window color to the windows
  11. Click the plus button and new button and rename the material “metal”
  12. Give the metal material a gray color (#474747)
  13. Select the door handle, top and bottom of the sails, and metal parts of the portholes (extrusions) and assign the metal color to the door handle, top and bottom of the sails, and metal parts
  14. Click the plus button and new button and rename the material “sail”
  15. Give the sail material a dark gray color (#1B1B1B)
  16. Select the sails and assign the sail color to the sails
