Tutorial: Painterly Effect

  1. Open the image
    ….File > Open
    Direct Link: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kilmaurs_Place,_view_of_main_garden.JPG
  2. Go to Image > Mode > 8Bits/Channel (if not already 8 bits)
  3. Make two copies of the image (CTRL + J)
  4. Hide the top two layers (click the eyeballs)
  5. Make the bottom layer active
  6. Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Sketch > Bas Relief
    ….Detail: 14
    ….Smoothness: 4
    ….Light: Top
  7. Make the middle layer visible and active
  8. Go to Image > Mode and change the layer mode to Color (if needed)
  9. Shift-Click the middle and bottom layers to choose them both and merge the layers (CTRL + E)
  10. Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Artistic > Cutout
    ….Number of Levels: 8
    ….Edge Simplicity: 3
    ….Edge Fidelity: 1
  11. Make the top layer visible and active
  12. Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Artistic > Cutout
    ….Number of Levels: 8
    ….Edge Simplicity: 4
    ….Edge Fidelity: 1
  13. Change the Layer Mode to Overlay
  14. Click on the Adjustment Layer icon and choose Brightness/Contrast
    ….Brightness: -40
    ….Contrast: 45
  15. Open the Denim Texture

  16. Choose the Move Tool and drag the texture layer onto the Garden tab and without releasing the mouse button drag the texture onto the image
  17. Use CTRL + T to resize the Denim Texture (Use CTRL + 0 to see the entire texture image) – Use CTRL  SHIFT to keep the texture in perspective
  18. Use CTRL + 1 to view the image at 100%
  19. Change the Layer Mode to Screen and the Opacity to 20%
