Tutorial: Shiny Glass Text

  1. Create a new project
    ….File > New (Width: 640 Height: 400)
  2. Fill the background with a dark gradient (I used 200202 for the foreground color and 4e0c0c for the background color)
    ….Gradient: FG to BG RGB
    ….Shape: Linear
    …. Drag a straight line from the top to the bottom of the Background (hold down Control to ensure a straight line)
  3. Select the Text Tool and set your color to a light color similar to your background color (I used 9a0707)
  4. Type out your text (I used the Sans font with a size of 170)
  5. Chose the Alignment Tool and click on the Text once
    ….Align Center of Target
    ….Align Middle of Target
  6. Right-click on your Text Layer and choose Text to Path
  7. Change the Text Layer Opacity to 60%
  8. Add a drop-shadow to the text
    ….Filters>Light and Shadow>Drop Shadow
    ….Use the Default Settings
  9. Create a new layer above the Text Layer
    ….Name: Inner Glow
    ….Fill Type: Transparency
  10. Set your foreground color to a very light color similar to the background color (I used e73030)
  11. Go to Select > From Path
  12. Go to Select > Feather and feather the selection by 10 pixels
  13. Choose the Paint Bucket Tool and fill the selection with the foreground color
  14. Go to Select > Shrink and shrink the selection by 2 pixels
  15. Go to Edit > Clear
  16. Go to Select > None
  17. Change the Layer Mode of the Inner Glow Layer to Screen and change the Opacity to 50%
  18. Create a new layer above the Inner Glow Layer
    ….Name: Center
    ….Fill Type: Transparency
  19. Change your foreground color to black
  20. Go to Select > From Path
  21. Go to Select > Shrink and shrink the selection by 4 pixels
  22. Go to Select > Feather and feather the selection by 10 pixels
  23. Choose the Paint Bucket Tool fill the selection with black
  24. Change the Layer Mode to Overlay
  25. Go to Select > None
  26. Create a new Layer above the Center Layer
    ….Name: Gloss
    ….Fill Type: Transparency
  27. Go to Select > From Path
  28. Choose your Ellipse Select Tool
    ….In the Ellipse Select panel change the Mode to Intersect (the icon on the far-right)
  29. Draw an oval over the top-half of the text
  30. Change your foreground color to white
  31. Select your Gradient Tool
    ….Choose FG to Transparent
    ….The Shape should be Linear
  32. Drag a straight line from the top to the bottom of the letters (hold down Control to ensure a straight line)
  33. Go to Select > None
  34. Lower the Gloss Layer Opacity to 50%
