Tutorial: Yin Yang Symbol

  1. Create a new project
    ….File > New (Width: 720; Height: 720)
  2. Fit the project on your screen (CTRL + 0)
  3. Choose the Gradient Tool and click on the Gradient Box (under the Paint Bucket Tool)
    ….Choose a color for the Left Stop (I used ff0000)
    ….Choose a darker gradient of the Left Stop color for the Right stop (I used 870303)
  4. Hold SHIFT and drag from the bottom of the project to the center
  5. Double-click on the Background thumbnail and rename it Base
  6. Go to View and make sure Rulers and Snap are checked
  7. Drag out a vertical ruler to the center (360 px) and a horizontal ruler to just above the center of the project (325 px)
  8. Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool (under the Rectangular Marquee Tool) and holding down SHIFT + ALT drag a large circle out from the center of the guidelines
  9. Make a new layer and make sure your foreground color is set to black
  10. Press ALT + DELETE to fill the selection with black
  11. Click on the Layer Mask button
  12. Click on the black circle thumbnail to make it active
  13. Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool
  14. Drag out a rectangle along the left side of the project to the center vertical guide
  15. Make sure your background color is white and fill the selection with white (CTRL + DELETE)
  16. Delete the selection (CTRL + D)
  17. CTRL-click on the layer mask
  18. Go to Select > Transform Selection
  19. Go to the lower-right of the transform and holding SHIFT drag up to the left until you reach the crosshairs
  20. Click inside the selection and holding SHIFT drag the selection to the right until it snaps to the center and press ENTER
  21. Make a new layer and fill the selection with white (CTRL + DELETE)
  22. Go to Select > Transform Selection
  23. Go to a corner and holding SHIFT + ALT make the selection a smaller size (115 px) and press ENTER
  24. Fill the selection with black (ALT + DELETE) and delete the selection (CTRL + D)
  25. Make a copy of the layer (CTRL + J) and invert it (CTRL + I) and drag it below the top layer
  26. Choose the Move Tool and while holding down SHIFT and drag it down until it snaps to the bottom of the outer circle
  27. Hide the guidelines (CTRL + H)
  28. Hide the Base layer (click on the eyeball)
  29. Make a composite snapshot (CTRL +SHIFT + ALT + E) and move it to the top of the stack and rename the layer Symbol
  30. Hide the other layers (click on the eyeballs) and make the background visible (click on the eyeball)
  31. Make a copy of the symbol (CTRL + J) and rename the layer Reflection
  32. Open the Transform Tool (CTRL + T)
  33. Go to the top of the transform and drag it down to the bottom of the project then hit ENTER
  34. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur
    ….Radius: 5
  35. Reduce the layer’s opacity to 30%
  36. Make a layer mask next to the reflection
  37. Choose the Gradient Tool and click on the Gradient Box
    ….Black, White Gradient (third from the left)
  38. Hold SHIFT and drag up from the bottom of the project to the bottom of the symbol
  39. Make the Symbol Layer active and double-click the thumbnail to open the Layer Style Panel
    ….Click on Inner Glow
    ….….Color: Black
    ….….Blend Mode: Normal
    ….….Opacity: 75
    ….….Size: 250
