How to make your own of wood materials | Substance Painter

Do you need a wood material for you project?

In this tutorial I will show you two methods of making wood materials in Substance Painter that you can be reused for various projects

Method  1

This is the first method I will show you

I add a fill layer and rename it to base layer

Under the materials panel, I will change the base color to a mid-tone brown [#8B6E44]

I add a new fill layer and rename it to grain01

I right-click and add a black mask

With the black mask selected, I right-click on the black mask and add a fill

Under the textures options, I search for grunge maps

I will choose grunge map 002 and drag it onto the grayscale of the properties panel

Back on the fill, I use ALT-Left click to choose only the color map for the material

I can now change the base color to a darker brown under the properties panel [#574023]

I use CTRL + D to duplicate the layer and rename it grain02

I then select the grunge map and lower the contrast and balance parameters

I also change the offset transformations

I choose the fill and change the base color to a lighter brown [#785326]

I use CTRL + D to duplicate the layer and rename it grain03

I then drag in the grunge brushed map and change the contrast and balance parameters

I also change the offset transformations

I choose the fill and change the base color to a darker brown [#4B3315]

I make a new folder to contain all of my layers and rename it

I drag my layers into the folder

I can now right-click on the folder and create a smart material

Method  2

This is the second method I will show you

I add a fill layer and rename it to base layer

Under the materials panel, I will change the base color to a mid-tone brown [#462D17]

I also change the roughness to 1

I use CTRL + D to duplicate the layer and rename it to mid-tone

I choose the fill and change the base color to a mid-tone brown [#7D4F27]

I right-click and add a black mask

With the black mask selected, I right-click on the black mask and add a fill

I search for “directional noise” and  drag directional noise 01 onto the grayscale of the properties panel

I then change the balance and contrast parameters

I also increase the scale of the noise parameters

I use CTRL + D to duplicate the layer and rename it to light-tone

I choose the fill and change the base color to a lighter-tone brown [#C1722D]

I also increase the scale of the noise parameters

I also change the balance and contrast parameters

I use CTRL + D to duplicate the layer and rename it to dark-tone

I choose the fill and change the base color to a dark brown [#38210D]

I select the mask and drag directional noise 02 onto the grayscale of the properties panel

I also change the balance and contrast and increase the scale of the noise parameters

I add a new fill layer and rename it to edges

I change the base color to a very light brown and increase the roughness to 1 [#E59C5C]

I right-click and add a black mask

With the black mask selected, I add a curvature generator

I then change the balance and the contrast parameters

I change the “use texture” slot to true

I search for grunge and drag the grunge dusty powder mass onto the texture slot of the image input

I can now increase the texture opacity

I change the blend mode to screen and lower the opacity of the generator

I make a new folder to contain all of my layers and rename it

I drag my layers into the folder

I can now right-click on the folder and create a smart material
